Spring is here which means I find myself under a barrage of spring cleaning jobs from she who must be obeyed. Weekends now seem to be taken up with sorting out the garden, clearing out the garage (and even worse rumours of clearing out the loft) in between children's sporting events and washing thing (bikes,car motor bike).Anyway between all this I've managed to find some time to paint up some chaos warriors for my WFB army. I decided to go for a chaos undivided army rather than a chosen power but I didn't want to go down the black and silver/gold route favoured for chaos armies these days.
I played around with some colour schemes and decided on this red and green combo which I'll carry over to the rest of the army.
The miniatures are all pre-slotta citadel miniatures chaos warriors circa 1984 (except the guy in the bottom picture who is a very early post slotta circa 1985). There are a few conversions with bits from my bits box, because a) I had some duplicates and b) some of the lead weapons where very bent.
These guys could be warriors or marauders depending on the pts of the army. As warriors this unit weighs in at circa 1000pts for 12 models ............
I've got another 15 or so of these old school warriors as well as a unit of old school beastmen to go with them. Some characters and a few odds and sods to add to the baggage train. I might throw in some Mantic Abyssal Dwarfs as allies to.

Very nice. I really like the old figures but they are so costly no it moves them out of my price range.

ReplyDeletethe key to picking up the older miniatures I've found is patience. They turn up on ebay all the time but as you say prices can get a bit silly. Generally I decide a price and stick to it 9/10 times I don't win but something always slips through the net of overspenders. Painted/ broken are normally cheaper too, I think the collectors want untouched miniatures. So if you don't mind paint stripping or the odd repair job you can get decent prices. It's how I built up my Slann army. Of course it takes a lot longer to collect any army using ebay, and the army usually ends up being built on the basis of what you can get rather than what you might want.

These are beautiful! I've been slowly building up an old 3rd ed chaos army, using the old slottabase figures - I didn't realise that the pre-slotta ones looked like they did. I'm curious - are you building this army in conjunction with the Realms of Chaos books, are is this all being built just on the Warhammer Armies Book?

ReplyDeletejust the list from Warhammer Armies. I do have the Relams of chaos books though. The lists in Slaves to darkness (Khorne and Slannesh) were quite good with the addation of Dark elves and chaos dwarfs. The Lost and the Dammaned lists (Tzeentch and Nurgle) are a completly different format to all other 3rd edition lists which I don't like. Also using the Relams of chaos lists my army is likely to be lead by a level 5 halfing with tentacles and one leg rather than a fearsome Lord of chaos.
