undead army in five days - part 4

Well I managed to get the twenty ghouls blocked in and magic washed tonight and made a start on the artillery. It's now got to the stage where I'm making mistakes through tiredness so that's it for tonight. All the piants are from GW and I'm trying to keep to a limited palette of red, black, cream/bone, dark brown and silver

I don't think I've done too bad for what is basically two evenings works. I've got work again tomorrow and then it's the weekend so I've got nearly two solid days of painting time then. It's going to be tight but I still think I can do this.

Right, I got up early this morning and managed to PVA and sand all the bases with my morning coffee before I left for work. Popped into Hobby Craft on the way home from work and grabbed some white primer. Primed the whole lot when I got home and right know the models are drying while I have tea. Later on I'll start blocking in colours in rediness for magic washing the models.

The blocking in is going to be pretty labour intensive and is probably the least fun bit so time to stick to my guns, knuckle down and stay away from the computer!

undead army in five days - part 2

Right stage one complete, that all went pretty well. The Mantic miniatures are mostly in two-three parts (lower body, upper body and head). A few on each sprue are a little more complicated with a separate arm and weapon. They go together fine with normal poly-cement. All in all I'm impressed.

Next job on the list will be to texture all the bases with sand and PVA before priming with a spray primer, then I can start the proper painting on Friday.

undead army in five days - part one

Well my Mantic games undead army has turned up just in time for my wife to take the kids to her mums for five days. Yes that's right five days to do what I like. So the plan is to stick together, paint and base my new undead army before the family get back home. I'll try and post updates on here when I get time.

Altogether it comes to 60 infantry, 2 catapults and a few character models (including a couple of old undead models from my bits box)

I really like the look of these undead now I've seen them in the flesh and can't wait to get started. So tonight's task is sticking all the models together ready for priming. Lets see how it goes.

Old skool elves

Hi all,

as you might have guessed a new project looms on the horizon. I've been following the rise of Mantic (http://www.manticgames.com/) I was disappointed with their elves (a style thing really archers with shields, funny looking spears, really small elves just weren't for me) but I was impressed by the Undead and Dwarves.

Most of my early gaming was Fantasy using WFB 3rd edition and in a fit of nostalgia I decided to recruit a couple of new armies to use with 3rd edition WFB using Mantic's plastics. So I kicked off with the purchase of one of their undead army deals (which is hopefully in the post somewhere) for my birthday. Next I delved into the bits box to see if there where any old undead miniatures I could use.

Sadly I didn't find to many undead but I did find a whole load of elves, enough in fact to build a small elf force. So first up we have a unit of elven archers, according to the base tabs these are GW from 1985. Being from 1985 may explain the Dallas style shoulder pads they're sporting, but all in all I think these guys have aged quite well. I have another unit of ten of these guys as well as twenty other GW elves from the same date that hopefully will become a merchant company unit (50:50 spear and bow).

These guys where painted using my usual magic wash method and I've done a much better job than I would have in 1985 for sure.

VBCW Command Groups

Hi,

well I'm making steady progress with my VBCW project and thought I'd show some of latest additions to my forces. I've decided to organize my forces to use with warhammer great war rules (although as they are single figures it's not hard to change to a different rule set). One thing about WGW is you need quite a few command groups so here are mine.

The top pictures (blue armbands) are my Anglican league force the five man group are the battalion HQ while the two three men groups are the company HQs. Below that we have Lord Encombes Royalist militia (red and white armbands). The five man group is lord Encombe himself and his battalion HQ like any country gent he is found of his animals. The four man group is a company HQ.

Miniatures are from three main sources Gripping beasts WW1 range, Great war miniatures and Artizans thrilling tales range. The flags are made from paper and PVA. Most of the armbands where added by me using green stuff (although some of the Great war miniatures already had them)

Roman Auxilla

Hi,

well the ancients project I started last Christmas is still moving along (very) slowly. I've finally got these two units of auxilla finished. All the miniatures are from warlord games mostly plastic except for the commands and two rankers which are metal. Under the Crusader rules these guys count as light infantry so I've based them three to a 40mm rendera plastic base. As usual there painted with a magic wash and then given some basic highlights.

As with previous units in this project my spare plastic models where hacked up and put back together with some green stuff to produce some casualty and disorder markers (one figure for casualty two figures for disorder) before being mounted on a washer.

The warlord games Auxilla are really nice my only quibble is that the spears/standards on the metal command are really thin and bendy I doubt they'll survive to many games before they need replacing. I would have preferred the option of command models in the plastic box set but sadly all 24 models in the box are rankers.
